Why would a dental implant fail?

There are so many variables that contribute to the success or failure of an implant that the cause of failure can be difficult to determine. Frequent causes of implant failure are often linked to:

•	Smoking is the most common cause of dental implant failure in the US. Smoking is frequently the underlying cause of many of the following issues.
•	Failed Osseointegration can be the cause of a dental implant being loose or even falling out. Osseointegration is the process by which the bone in the jaw grows around the implant, cementing it into the jaw.
•	Infection can be an issue when bacteria enter the implant site during implant placement. It can also take hold of an implant site while it recovers during the healing process.
•	Nerve or Tissue Damage can cause an implant to be so uncomfortable that it must be removed. This is often caused by unseen or unplanned for nerve positioning.
•	Overloading a dental implant is an issue that can arise when the crown and abutment are placed onto the post at the same time as the post is placed into the jaw. Under certain, rare circumstances, the implant will become overloaded and will interrupt the process of osseointegration.
•	Sinus Issues can arise when the teeth being replaced by implants are the upper molars. Depending on the patient, the implants placed in this area of the mouth may come very close to the sinus cavity. If precautions (like a sinus lift) are not taken ahead of time, this can cause an implant to fail.

The rehabilitation process can take some time depending on the root of the cause. Sometimes we will allow the implant site to heal for a month or two before beginning the steps for replacement, other times we can start the rehab process right away.
