Times Where Healthy Wisdom Teeth Should Be Kept

While we usually extract wisdom teeth to make more room for your natural teeth, there are times when it is alright to keep wisdom teeth and not remove them. If those back teeth have not erupted, but, instead, are impacted, it is better to have them extracted. If you don't remove them, they can cause pain and crowd the teeth already in your mouth. With that being said, sometimes we find that wisdom teeth can be preserved.
When It Is Okay to Leave the Wisdom Teeth Alone
If your teeth come in normally and are upright and functional, they may not need to be removed. If they do not cause you pain and are not triggering decay or gum disease, they may be able to be preserved. However, you still have to remember that even correctly positioned teeth can cause problems. That is because they are situated so far back in the mouth, they can be hard to brush, floss, and keep clean. If you wish to keep your teeth, make sure you floss and brush them daily and schedule regular dental exams and cleanings with our office.

While the teeth may not hurt now, they may cause future dental issues. It is better to play it safe than sorry, and, in most cases, have them removed. Studies show that when teeth, like wisdom teeth, are located too far back in the mouth to be helpful functionally. In fact, the bacteria that causes periodontal disease can still linger on the teeth. That is why it is better to see us about having even the “healthy†wisdom teeth removed. However, if they are giving you no problem and you are not developing cavities, we won't push you to have them extracted.
