There are many conflicting answers to this question on the internet. Some say two minutes is the best length of time to brush your teeth, even most electric toothbrushes come with a built in two minute timer. There are also those who say as little as one and a half minutes and we have even heard reports of people recommending up to five minutes for a brushing! Today we will explore what is not only the appropriate length of time for brushing, but also some techniques you should have in your arsenal. Take The Time You Need While you shouldn't be done brushing your teeth in under a minute, you don't necessarily need to be spending 20 minutes a day doing it either. The most important thing to remember is you need to take your time and hit every surface of every tooth. Generally, this takes around two minutes. Spend the time that you need to in order to brush every surface of every tooth, the gums, tongue and insides of the cheeks as well. All of the surfaces in your mouth collect plaque and bacteria and so they all need a good cleaning. Make sure that the toothbrush you have chosen for your twice daily brushing has been approved by the American Dental Association, and don't forget the floss! In between each and every tooth and under the gum line. Removing the plaque and tartar build up will help keep your smile looking beautiful for years to come. Mouthwash is another tool that you should work into your oral health regime. The most important thing in your brushing routine is making sure that you are brushing regularly. Every morning and every evening is our recommendation and shoot for two to three minutes to make sure that you are hitting every tooth. Give us a call and schedule your next cleaning soon! We look forward to hearing from you. |
