When Good Teeth Go Bad - How to Tell if You Have a Cavity

Brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist for checkups and cleanings are all essential for maintaining a healthy smile. But even with the best intentions, cavities can still develop.

A cavity is a hole in your tooth that is caused by tooth decay. Tooth decay is a process that starts when bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars and starches from the food you eat. These bacteria produce acid, which can erode the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth. Over time, this erosion can create a cavity.

Cavities can be a real pain, both literally and figuratively. They can cause sensitivity to hot and cold, pain when you chew, and even toothaches. In some cases, cavities can even lead to the loss of a tooth.

How to Tell if You Have a Cavity

The good news is that cavities are preventable. And even if you do develop a cavity, it can often be treated with restoration dentistry, which involves filling the cavity with a material like composite resin or amalgam.

But how do you know if you have a cavity? Here are some signs to watch out for:
•  Sensitivity to hot and cold: If your teeth are suddenly sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks, it could be a sign that you have a cavity.
•  Pain when you chew: If you feel pain when you chew, it could be a sign that you have a cavity that is affecting the nerve of your tooth.
•  Visible holes in your teeth: If you can see a hole in your tooth, it's a pretty good indication that you have a cavity.
•  White spots on your teeth: White spots on your teeth can be a sign of early decay.

What to Do if You Think You Have a Cavity

If you think you have a cavity, it's important to see your dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to examine your teeth and determine if you have a cavity. If you do have a cavity, they will be able to discuss treatment options with you.

Prevention is Key

The best way to avoid cavities is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. You should also avoid sugary drinks and snacks, and eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables.

By following these tips, you can help keep your smile healthy and cavity-free.
