Is Sparkling Water Better for Your Teeth Than Soda?

Sparkling Water: The Good, the Bad, and the Bubbly

Sparkling water, also known as carbonated water, is simply water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas. This gives it its signature fizz and slightly tangy taste.

On the plus side, sparkling water is:
•  Sugar-free: Unlike soda, which can contain upwards of 30 grams of sugar per can, sparkling water has zero grams of sugar. This makes it a much better choice for people who are trying to avoid sugar or who have diabetes.
•  Low in calories: Most sparkling waters are calorie-free, making them a good option for people who are watching their weight.
•  Hydrating: Just like plain water, sparkling water can help you stay hydrated, which is important for overall health and well-being.

The Potential Downside of Sparkling Water: Acidity

However, sparkling water is not without its drawbacks. The carbonation process makes sparkling water slightly acidic, with a pH of around 5.5. This acidity can potentially erode tooth enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth that protects them from decay.

What Does the Research Say?

There is some research to suggest that sparkling water may be less damaging to teeth than soda. One study found that sparkling water caused less enamel erosion than soda, even though both beverages had a similar pH level.

However, other studies have found that sparkling water can erode tooth enamel at a similar rate to soda.

So, What's the Verdict?

The bottom line is that more research is needed to determine the long-term effects of sparkling water on teeth.

In the meantime, here are some things to keep in mind:
•  Moderation is key. If you enjoy sparkling water, drink it in moderation.
•  Choose plain water over sparkling water whenever possible. Plain water is the healthiest choice for your teeth and your overall health.
•  Brush your teeth regularly and see your dentist for checkups. This is the best way to keep your teeth healthy and prevent cavities, regardless of whether you drink sparkling water or not.
