Our efforts after placing the braces on your teeth are said to be half complete. The other half is considered taking care of them. It is therefore important to take care of your teeth and gums and keep them clean. They are supposed to be plaque-free and perfect while in your mouth. This will ensure the best work and results.
Things you will need
In the quest to take care of your braces, you will need a small toothbrush, it should be small enough to reach around the braces. Moreover, the bristles are to be soft, polished nylon, and with a flat brushing surface. The dentist will recommend the best toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should not also forget to get the dental floss for the spaces in between the teeth.
How to brush your teeth and gums
When you have braces on, it is up to you to keep your oral health at the best. You will have to brush your teeth and gums five times a day for at least 5 minutes. You can do this after waking up and after every meal and also before you go to bed.
When you brush your teeth, consider brushing back and forth at an angle over the top of your band and bracket aiming at your tooth. Brush under the bracket ensuring to not forget to brush the biting surfaces near your tongue. Also, use a circular motion while brushing your gums, and do not forget to brush your tongue too.
Taking care of the braces
To prevent them from breaking or coming off, you are advised not to eat corn on the cob, caramels, ice (especially do not chew), whole raw carrots, peanut brittle, popcorn, hard apples, and gum of any kind. While flossing, remember to floss each side of the tooth space, and pull the floss out of the space with one hand as you release it off the space with the other hand. Repeat the process until you have cleaned all the teeth. If you have any questions, please call us and ask for guidance.
